About The England Society"To Protect, Practise and Promote"The England Society is based upon the concept of a civic Englishness. A term given to those who identify themselves as English through their beliefs, rather than ancestry, and who acknowledge the contribution our industrial, monarchial and religious heritage has given us. We recognise that Englishness can be defined as a definite ethnic identity and a civic declaration, either seperately or collectively. The England Society exists to recognise the former and actively promote the latter. Following the acknowledged failure of multiculturalism and the damage it continues to cause, we must find a consensus to bind our shattered society together and to strengthen our English identity just as it faces new challenges both internally and externally. England is a country which draws its most recent laws, history and social mores from Christianity and despite recent developments and the movement away from mainstream religion, this ecclesiastical cultural heritage has helped to shape our country today. The England Society is an organisation defined by its members' commitment to a common set of policies and values in relation to English culture, traditions and history. Acceptance of these policies and values is required for membership. We are also working on a code of ethics to which politicians, bloggers, journalists or indeed anyone can subscribe. What is English culture? Our culture is our language, our history, our national celebrations, our sense of nationhood and even the buildings and institutions around us. Our traditions and ceremonies form our national identity. Whether you agree or not with everything that England has accomplished, this culture has certainly helped mould our country into one in which millions of people aspire to work and live. To be English is to be part of the world's richest culture. From this sceptred isle sprang talents as diverse as Kipling and Chaplin, George Orwell and Shakespeare, Nelson and Marc Bolan . In every field, in every era, the evidence of English greatness is there for all to see, from the enduring genius of Elgar to Kelly Holmes notching up a double gold at the Olympics. The current (2008) Labour government have embarked upon an aggressive campaign to strip England of any identity. From creating unelected regional assemblies, planning to abolish our historic Shire counties to even making statements regarding the very existence of England - Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott stated "...there is no such nationality as English". This systematic erosion is subtle, with minor changes which, drip by drip, erode centuries of English heritage and identity causing a slow chipping away at the foundational heritage that gave birth to those values we all share. We will resist any attempt to strip us of our right to our own cultural identity, as we believe it is one of our fundamental human rights. Partnerships By bringing together the various English campaigning groups under one umbrella we aim to raise the collective media profile and share what limited resources we have amongst ourselves. There is little point in splitting differences over some small aspect of Englishness when we can achieve so much more together. We intend to build the infrastructure which will allow a new English nation to arise from the ashes of the former United Kingdom. We wish to form partnerships and relationships with other like minded organisations. Like overlapping circles, we are all focused on the same beliefs, aims and outcomes. If you represent a group which agrees with our mission of "to protect, practise and promote", then please get in touch with us. The England Society supports the formation of an English Council as an interim to an English Parliament. What do we do? At the present time we are cultural lobbyists, that is we lobby the government, business media and local authorities to improve their representation of the English. This ranges from simply asking for an opinion on certain subjects for the record, to actively redressing any perceived inequalities and imbalances. The Society maintains an online database of correspondence with individuals and organisations for the record. We are building up a lending library of relevant books and papers for members to use for research. We monitor local, national and international media, in part to challenge negative stereotypes, but also to applaud and encourage positive representations of England We produce Action Alerts to members as a means of promoting local activitism and generating an effective, grassroots response on important issues. We believe local response is a key factor in making our voices heard and understood. We produce and manage a range of websites aimed at either protesting about or raising awareness of a key issue. We are compiling a database of people who can speak to the media on English issues. What will this achieve? We intend to create and maintain the conditions under which England and her people will become and remain dominant in their own country through political and cultural power. To act as an umbrella body for a wide range of other English organisations, seeking by the weight of numbers to present a more powerful voice to the public, media and government. The seriousness of our campaign cannot be underestimated. We do not think that this can be won in a few years, we have to think in terms of generations. Starting this process now is our only option. We intend to increase the range and scope of our activities over the coming years including the raising of a fund to implement our core objective of "to protect, practise and promote" English culture, history and tradition.
